Right outside of our shop in Poundbury, Dorchester, on the first Saturday morning of every month, there is a Farmer's Market. It is a great way to try and buy produce from local farmers and manufacturers. Many of the stall holders have samples, some of them even cook their wares for you to sample. They tend to use far less packaging and will have almost certainly have travelled a fraction of the distance of food that is sent to supermarkets.
Combine these benefits with the pleasure of wandering from table to table, chatting to the people who have been involved in the production of the products and are always passionate and informed about it, bumping into friends, sometimes live music....the atmosphere is wonderful.
Critics say the prices are high, but I reckon you get what you pay for and for me it is money well spent!
